Aids carrier leaves hospital

THE man who is the latest Singapore person to be identified as a carrier of the Aids-related virus left hospital yesterday.

He also had severe depression and was admitted to Alexandra Hospital more than a week ago.

A Health Ministry spokesman yesterday said the man was discharged because he was "all right”. He has also seen a psychiatrist.

The ministry had said on Friday that the man did not have Aids (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).

It was learnt yesterday that more people might be carrying the Aids-related virus, HTLV-III.

It is understood that these probable new cases are people whose blood tests show they have the antibodies to the virus.

The man, a homosexual, is attending counselling sessions at the Middle Road Hospital like the other three men who were identified earlier by the ministry as carriers of the virus.

His blood samples have been sent to the United States for confirmatory tests, but the results are not available yet.

Sent to US

Until laboratory facilities for the confirmatory Western Blot test are ready here, blood samples will continue to be sent to the US. Alternatively, some samples may be sent to Australia.

Laboratory equipment for the test have been ordered for the Pathology Department of the Singapore General Hospital.
