Man with Aids related virus in hospital
By Kong Sook Chin
A man who was exposed to the Aids-related virus HTLV-III has been admitted to Alexandra Hospital.
It is understood that he was admitted for severe depression.
A Health Ministry spokesman said yesterday that screening tests showed the man had the antibodies to the virus but he did not have Aids, acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or the symptoms.
Samples of his blood have been sent to the United States for tests and the ministry is awaiting the results.
The spokesman said the man, admitted last week, was not one of the three men identified earlier by the ministry as carriers of the virus.
He is also not the man who reportedly was suspected to have Kaposi's Sarcoma, a skin cancer which is a clinical manifestation of Aids.
The spokesman said that all necessary precautions to safeguard hospital and laboratory staff and patients from accidental infection had been taken.
These include the isolation of the patient in a room, proper disposal of medical supplies, wearing of gloves and a gown over the uniform, sterilisation of articles such as the gowns, and the wearing of masks.
