Nestled in a quiet corner of the Kampong Glam heritage district at 17 Jalan Pinang, Artistry was a hybrid art gallery and café in a shophouse run by openly gay proprietor Prashant Somosundram. It was his second enterprise and a further development of the defunct Pitch Black cafe along Haji Lane.
Artistry aimed to develop an intimate space for art, mastery of craft and creative endeavour with a nod to the quaint and quirky, and also LGBT issues. It sought to provide emerging artistes, both local and international, with a platform for their debut solo exhibitions and hosted talks, performances and events in its inviting space. Serving up the locally roasted Liberty Coffee and lovingly made artisan desserts served on beautifully hand-crafted pottery, Artistry was a refreshing addition to Singapore's burgeoning creative community. It created a comfortable venue for arts practitioners and patrons to reflect, connect, engage and share ideas.
