Braema Mathi is a consultant on corporate communication, the non-profit sector and social policies.
She was award-winning journalist with The Straits Times and initiated the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.
In January 2011, Braema was appointed as Honorary Research and Advocacy Director of AWARE.
Braema has a long history with AWARE, having joined in 1992, serving two consecutive terms as President of the association, as well as heading the CEDAW sub-committee. Part of her role is to review AWARE's research and advocacy (R&A) priorities, to subsequently set the framework and to put forth key areas to focus on in the short and long term. It marks the first time in AWARE’s history that a role such as this had been created.
Research and Advocacy forms one of the three pillars of our organisation (the other two being support services and the AWARE Training Institute). Her appointment strengthens the Research and Advocacy capabilities of AWARE.
Braema served as Nominated Member of Parliament from 2001 to 2004 and was a journalist with the Straits Times for nine years. In addition to her role at AWARE, she is also founder of MARUAH (Working Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism, Singapore), Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2) and A Recycling Network In Action (ARENA).
Braema has been a panelist at two ONE (SINGAPORE) discussions: “Redefining the Economics of Living: Meeting Singapore’s Social Needs” and “Child Prostitution,Human Trafficking and Poverty”.
Braema Mathi was a member of the Board of Advisors at ONE (SINGAPORE) from 07 August 2012 till 31 July 2013
Since 2013, Braema has been speaking out for LGBT equality in Singapore, on behalf of MARUAH.
