Sasja Sÿdek, an indigenous Singaporean trans woman of colour based in Narrm/Melbourne, is a passionate activist and advocate for the transgender community. Sasja, a co-founder of Trans Sisters United, passionately champions equality through her unwavering dedication to fairness and human rights, tirelessly combating violence against trans women while leading the not-for-profit organisation in developing initiatives supporting transgender women, non-binary individuals, and women through advocacy, education, and community partnerships, a co-founder of Queer Muslim Naarm, founded in 2024 by Sasja and Boudie, hosts inclusive Iftar events during Ramadan to unite queer Muslims and allies. Sasja is a recognised personality in television and radio, hosting "Trans Fabulous" on Channel 31. Her outstanding contributions as a radio presenter and producer at “Queering The Air” on 3CR 855am has been recognised with multiple awards. Furthermore, she is also a presenter at “Everybody Eats” on Joy 94.9fm. Sasja unwavering commitment to equality stems from her strong belief in equity and human rights and she encourages others to break free from societal and gender expectations to live authentically. In addition to her fervent advocacy for her community, Sasja harbours a deep passion for both fashion and food. She was majoring in Fashion Marketing and Management from Raffles LaSalle Institute Singapore, She embarked on her career in the fashion industry from 2003 to 2020. Sasja recently marked her entry into the modelling world by strutting down the runway for Global Indigenous Runway at the Melbourne Fashion Festival in March 2024. Sasja participated in the third season of The Bent Spoon, a television program highlighting cooking with Multicultural LGBTQIA individuals, where she demonstrated her culinary prowess. Sasja is one of the 18 subjects featured in a photo book *Foreground: Portraits of Older Transgender and Gender Diverse People* by Marlo W. Foreground is a celebration of a group of people who are often overlooked. Sharing the stories of older transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people is integral to demythologising transgender people to the broader community. There is a need to platform the voices of older TGD people who have long been marginalised by society and portrayed negatively in mainstream media. Sasja also emphasised the importance of balance in life, noting the necessity of advocating for the rights of transgender individuals while also prioritising self-care to avoid burnout.

After graduating from Bedok North Primary School, Sasja applied to three schools like any other student. Springfield Secondary School accepted her application, although it wasn't her first choice. Despite this, she was thrilled to attend a brand new school. In her first year, she found herself in an all-boys class comprised of students with the highest PSLE scores. Sasja gained recognition for her achievements in theater performing arts, participating in enrichment courses by professional theater companies and practitioners during her time at Springfield Secondary School. Following high school, Sasja took a break from academics to focus on her transitioning journey. Raised in a Muslim household, maintaining her faith while navigating her identity as a trans woman presented significant challenges. Despite her family's lack of understanding and support, Sasja made the difficult decision to leave home at 16 with minimal resources and a backpack filled with female clothing. She found guidance and support from Amy Tashiana, a transgender public figure in Singapore, who became her mentor. Under Amy's mentorship, Sasja learned to embrace her identity, develop independence, and navigate the process of legal hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Regrettably, Sasja's relationship with her mother and grandparents became limited to phone calls, with almost no communication for a year except for Hari Raya also known as Eid Mubarak wishes. It wasn't until six years later that Sasja reunited with her family, a reunion that paved the way for the development of a close bond with her mother and grandmother. Despite initial concerns and apprehensions from her family, Sasja's transition, employment, and life as a woman unfolded without descending into the chaos and doom they had feared. By the age of 20, Sasja had achieved financial independence, marking a significant milestone in her journey towards self-sufficiency. At 21, she underwent her first breast augmentation, a decision that affirmed her identity and empowered her to live authentically.

Sasja embarked on her academic journey at Raffles LaSalle Design Institute Singapore, driven by her passion for fashion and marketing. Although her pursuit of a degree in Fashion Marketing & Management was interrupted when she left college prematurely, it marked the beginning of her remarkable career in the fashion industry. With determination and talent, Sasja swiftly ascended to the role of fashion stylist, where her creative vision and impeccable taste caught the attention of industry luminaries. Collaborating with A-listers such as Supermodel Lily Cole, Bollywood actress and model Nargis Fakhri, and Photographer Chuando Tan, among others, Sasja's portfolio grew to include notable assignments spanning editorial and advertising styling. Her expertise extended beyond styling to encompass production for fashion runways and television/movie sets, showcasing her versatility and proficiency in various aspects of the fashion world.

Sasja was showcased in a documentary film selected for the European Film Festival 2001. Despite lacking acting experience, Sasja's captivating personality captured the attention of Andy, the film producer. The German-language documentary portrayed Sasja's daily life as a young transgender woman in Singapore, with film crews documenting her activities for seven consecutive months. Regrettably, the film did not receive any awards. Titled "Leben einer 'Prinzessin'" (Life of a "Princess"), it offered a glimpse into Sasja's journey.

On March 8, 2020, Sasja enthusiastically engaged in the Th!s Is Me fundraiser project and movement, which had a profound purpose: to generate funds for a family violence support group located in Melbourne. This noble endeavor coincided with both the prestigious Melbourne Fashion Festival and the globally recognised International Women's Day, enhancing its significance and reach. The Th!s Is Me Fashion Show emerged as a beacon of empowerment and inclusivity, offering a welcoming platform for women to celebrate their multifaceted identities authentically. Through this showcase, participants sought to shatter the confines of societal expectations, advocating for the recognition and celebration of each individual's inherent worth and uniqueness. By rejecting the notion of prescribed molds, the event aimed to in-still a sense of empowerment among women, encouraging them to boldly embrace their diverse attributes and contributions.

In this transformative environment, Sasja, alongside 33 other women, took to the runway with confidence and purpose, symbolising solidarity in the collective struggle against societal norms. Their participation underscored a commitment to supporting organisations dedicated to uplifting and empowering women, especially those navigating the challenging terrain of family violence. As they strutted with determination and grace, these women embodied resilience and courage, inspiring others to embrace their own journeys of self-discovery and authenticity. Through their collective efforts, they illuminated the path towards a more inclusive and compassionate society, one that honours and celebrates the inherent worth of every individual, regardless of societal expectations.

Sasja Sÿdek found herself immortalised in portraits alongside ten other women, spanning diverse ages from 20 to 60 years old, encompassing both cisgender and transgender individuals hailing from various cultural backgrounds such as Vietnam, Tanzania (Zanzibar), Southeast Asia, Indigenous Australia, and Europe. These captivating portraits were the work of artist Bernzerk, also known as Bernie Cliford, showcased at his art exhibition titled P.O.M.E.

Entitled "This is Me... Anymore It’s You...," the series captured the essence of each subject over the course of 18 months, inviting viewers to engage in a thought-provoking dialogue. The series juxtaposed deliberate sexualised imagery often found on dating and sex worker apps with portraits devoid of such intent, challenging societal perceptions and expectations regarding femininity and sexuality.

Through these striking portraits, Bernzerk sought to spark conversations surrounding the objectification of women in media and society, highlighting the contrast between authentic self-expression and the commodification of sexuality. By placing Sasja and her fellow subjects in the spotlight, the exhibition aimed to foster a deeper understanding of identity, agency, and the complexities of representation in contemporary culture.

The exhibition, "This is Me... Anymore It’s You...," offered a poignant reflection on the nuances of female identity and empowerment, inviting viewers to reevaluate preconceived notions and embrace the diversity of human experience. As the exhibition drew to a close in February 2021, its impact reverberated beyond the confines of the gallery, leaving a lasting impression on those who had the privilege of experiencing its powerful message.

In 2020, Sasja Sÿdek received an invitation from SlutWalk Melbourne to deliver a speech at their annual rally, a significant honour and testament to her advocacy for marginalised communities. The SlutWalk movement originated in 2011 following a controversial statement by a Toronto Police Services representative suggesting that women could avoid sexual assault by not dressing provocatively. This incendiary comment sparked widespread outrage and galvanized a global movement aimed at challenging victim-blaming and promoting consent culture.

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 "rally" couldn't take place in person. Instead, it was broadcast by 3CR Community Radio on Sunday, the 29th, at 1 pm. provided a platform for Sasja to share her personal experiences of discrimination, harassment, and violence faced by transgender and LGBTQIA+ individuals. In her impassioned address, Sasja shed light on the insidious issues of slut-shaming, body-shaming, victim-blaming, sexual harassment, and rape culture that permeate society. By bravely sharing her own story and advocating for awareness and change, Sasja demonstrated her unwavering commitment to justice and equality for all.

Her closing remarks encapsulated the essence of the SlutWalk Melbourne movement, emphasising the importance of education and awareness in dismantling harmful societal norms. Sasja eloquently stated, "The core of the problem lies in the difference between how society are raised and educated, but people will not become aware of that until they first learn what rape culture and slut-shaming are and how they have taken part in it. The first step to solving any problem is educating others about it first, and I think that really resonates through the Slut Walk Melbourne movement."

Through her participation in SlutWalk Melbourne and her powerful advocacy efforts, Sasja Sÿdek continues to be a beacon of hope and change in the ongoing struggle for gender equality and social justice. Though sports are not a major interest for Sasja, she is always open to trying new activities at least once. A few years ago, she tried surfing, an experience that she can now proudly check off her list.
