The Singapore Booksellers' Association began as the Singapore Booksellers And Stationers Association which was established in 1947. It drew all booksellers and stationers in to raise the level of culture in society and to take advantage of the development of the global economy and the information society of the 21st century.

It was the Vice-President of the Asia-Pacific Stationery Alliance (APSA), organising overseas business missions and participating local and oversea exhibitions annually. This is to develop the market and expand professional communication and cooperation among booksellers and stationers in the world.

Its logo depicts the image of a seagull with its wings widely spanned in full flight and in search of prey, gliding across the ocean. The symbolism behind the seagull in flight signifies that its trade must look beyond local waters to venture out into the global market. The acronym SBASA is used for the association. The classic font used is redolent with meaning as it symbolises that its trade will never fall behind in the midst of rapid technological advancement.

The Singapore Booksellers' Association was registered on 28th October 1966.

It was registered as a company (Company Number S66TU0460C) on 22 August 2008 but has since been deregistered[1].
