From the late 1980s to the mid-2000s, The New Paper regularly published sensationalistic articles about the LGBT community which cast it in a very negative light, presumably to drum up sales. It was following in the footsteps of many other tabloids. Many regarded it as the community's public enemy number one as the portrayals were widely read and worsened the already deep discrimination against the marginalised minority.
It was only starting from the latter half of the 2000s that the editorial team turned over a new leaf and starting featuring more LGBT-supportive stories
